Junior B march onto Final

Our junior B football team captained by Darren Shiggins had a fantastic win today in Bellfield overcoming Ballyhogue 5-11 to 2-05. Shels now meet Horeswood in the final. Well done to you all.

The Shelmalier Junior B footballers were always in control in their semi-final encounter with Ballyhogue played on Saturday last in Belfield. It was a early as the fifth minute that the Shels took the led with corner forward firing into the Ballyhogue net from close range. Ballyhogue did reply with points from John Condon and Shane Roche, but this spurred on the Shelmaliers who were beginning to control mid field where John Nolan, Eoghan Nolan and Brian O Connor were very prominent in this area.  In the 15th minute Eoghan Nolan was fouled in the penalty area with Barry Redmond stepped up and coolly converted the resulting penalty. A minute late James Shiggins extended his teams lead with a well taken point and further points from Eoghan Nolan, Simon Donohoe and Darren Shiggins  saw the black and amber lead by 2-5 to 0-3 at half time with Shane Roche converting a free for Ballyhogue in the 25th minute.
Ballyhogue came out the stronger in the second half but they failed to convert a number of scoring chances with Shels goalie Sean Byrne in splendid form between the sticks. Barry Redmond pointed in the 7th minute but Ballyhogue continued to press forward and were rewarded with a point in the 13th minute and a Sean Cash goal in the 14th minute. At 2-6 to 1-4 the game was now on, however, the Shels had other ideas and further points from Eoghan Nolan and Brian O Connor put their team back in control of the match. With Simon Donohoe now pushing forward he succeeded in scored two outstanding goal in quick succession, firing to the roof of the net on both occasions following a powerful run from deep.  Graham Staples added two further points from play and Graham Parker pointing for Ballyhogue. As the clock ticked into extra time the spectators witnessed two further goals from Shelmaliers Graham Staples and Ballyhogue’s Lorcan Creane, to leave a full time score of Shelmaliers 5-11 Ballyhogue 1-5.
It was a great team performance from the Shelmaliers with Dessie Kehoe, Donal Power and Gary Murphy shining in defence. Shelmaliers midfield area was always in control with the Nolan father and son combination ably assisted by Brian O Connor, Bobby Delaney and Darren Shiggins. The full forward line of Graham Staples, James Shiggins and Barry Redmond caused major problems for the Ballyhogue backs all day.
