Shels win district Final

jun bShelmaliers Junior B footballers put in a great team performance to overcome a fancied Sarsfield side in the Wexford District Junior B Football final by 2-6 to 0-8 played on Friday night in Ballymurn.

The Shelmaliers stormed to a 2-5 to 0-1 half time lead and had to withstand a great Sarsfield fight back in the second half which allowed captain Darren Shiggins to receive the cup from District Chairperson Mary Whelan.

The Shelmaliers Junior B footballers put in a great team performance to overcome a fancied Sarsfields side in the Wexford District Junior B Football final by 2-6 to 0-8 played on Friday night in Ballymurn. The Shelmaliers stormed to a 2-5 to 0-1 half time lead and had to withstand a great Sarsfields fight back in the second half which allowed captain Darren Shiggins to receive the cup from District Chairperson Mary Whelan. James Shiggins opened the Shels scoring in the 5th minute and Brian O Connor doubled his sides lead from a free two minutes late. There was great cheers from the Shels supporters when Barry Redmond raced through the Sars defence to fire to the net and Brian O Connor pointed shortly afterwards to lead by 1-3 to no score. This was a period of great Shels play with Aidan Clarke, Graham Staples, Eoghan Nolan and Darren Shiggins in great form for the black and amber side. Eoin O Leary on for the injured John Nolan pointed in the 20th minute from 30 yards having received a fine pass from Brian O Connor. In the closing stages of the first half the Shelmaliers extended their lead to 2-5 to 0-1 with a point from Aidan Clarke and a second goal from Barry Redmond.
The Sars came out with real determination in the second half and they scored 4 unanswered points before Eoghan Nolan pointed for the Shelmaliers in the 12th minute to give a score 2-6 to 0-5. During this period the Shels full back line of Sean Byrne, Barry Murphy, Donal Power, Gary Murphy showed outstanding defensive play to keep the Sars forward line at bay. The Sars continued putting the Shels defence under pressure however, Shels half back line of Darren Doyle Dessie Kehoe and Robbie Staples stopped many Sars attacks, restricted the Sars to three further points to leave a full time score of Shelmaliers 2-6 Sarsfields 0-8.
