Shels beat GOH in Junior Hurling

Great display by Shels Junior hurlers.

In very poor weather conditions in Hollymount on Saturday evening last the Shelmalier Junior hurlers were always in control againstGeraldine O’Hanrahans, New Ross winning by 6-16 to 1-6. The Shels got off to a great start with 3 points within the first 8minutes with Ibar Murphy and Shane Bieney (2) on the mark for the home side. Shane again was involved in the next score when delivering a great pass to Padraic Coone who fired into the Ross net. Chris Gordan was on hand to shoot a point in the 12th minute with Stephen Corrigan and Tommy Barron extending the lead to 1-6 to 0-2 after 20 minutes. Corrigan and Coone combined to extend the Shels lead with Corrigan goal in the 22nd minute. A Tommy Barron side line cut a minute late found Padraic Coone on the edge of the square and he made no mistake in making it 3-6 for the black and amber men and the same players combined in the 25th minute when the Shels were awarded a penalty and Tommy’s shot was stopped but Padraic was on hand to deliver the ball to the Ross net.
With the weather not improving the second half saw a Ross revival but fine play from Stephen Whelan, Darren Malone, Denis Kelly, Seamie Harding and Conor Tobin ensured the Ross men were failed to use their good procession. The Shels scored a further seven points between the 10th and 20th to extend their lead to 4-15 to 1-5 and sub Sean Byrne made an immediate impact with two goals in the 21st and 23rd minutes with long ball from Willie O Shaughnessy for the first goal and good interplay for the second.
