Nine Shelmalier regulars were on the starting St. Peter’s college team that accounted for Knockbeg College today in Power Park, in the Leinster SFC ‘A’, Round 2.
Stephen Corrigan (0-1), Shane Griffith, Aidan Cash, Craig McCabe and Feargal Hynes lined out in defence whilst James Gordon (0-2) was centre of the field with AJ Lehane (0-1), Niall Murphy (0-1) and Glen Murphy in attack. Peters playing with the wind in the first half played a good brand of football in dreadful weather and ground conditions. Knockbeg’s cause was not helped when they were reduced to 14 men before the break and at this stage Peter’s led 0-6 to 0-1. A more determined Knockbeg came out on the resumption and they were piling on the pressure, when a rare lapse in defence let them in for a goal. Buoyed by this, they scored two further points and with five minutes to go they were within 1 point of Peter’s but the home team held strong and with Niall Murphy scoring an insurance point just on full time, it left the final score 0-8 to 1-3, in favour of St. Peter’s College. A great result for the college and indeed for our club as all nine players did themselves, their college and their club proud.
