Jim Byrne Cup qtr final

jgShelmaliers contested the quarter final of the Jim Byrne cup Sunday last in Ballymore, where they met the amalgamation club of St. Fintan’s and Our Lady’s Island.

Both teams were fairly evenly matched for the first quarter, with Stephen Corrigan pointing, James Gordon scoring a goal and Feargal Hynes converting a free. The opposition pointed twice in the same period. Shels started to pull away then with points from Neil Rossiter, Aidan Cash and Niall Murphy (F) to leave the half time score 1-7 to 0-4.

The supreme fitness and team work of Shels became more evident in the second half and with 4 majors coming courtesy of Glen Murphy, Feargal Hynes, James Gordon and Niall Tobin, plus 3 points from Brian Murphy, Aidan Cash and Stephen Corrigan whilst the opposing team only managed a single point in the second half, seeing Shels run out easy winners.Final score 5-10 to 0-5. The score however did not reflect the tremendous effort St. Fintan’s/OLI were putting in and they fought hard to the bitter end. Two penalties were thwarted by Shels keeper Shane Birney and but for this they may have had a better chance of being closer to the Shels at the end. Amongst those to shine were, Stephen Corrigan, Aidan Cash, Glen Murphy, James Gordon and Shane Griffith.

Team: Shane Birney, Johnny Campbell, Paraic O’Leary, Dean Corrigan, Niall Murphy, Shane Griffith, Neil Rossiter, Aidan Cash, Stephen Corrigan, Brian Murphy, Cian Lambe, Glen Murphy, Feargal Hynes and Simon Murphy.

Subs introduced Niall Tobin.
