Seniors Draw in Leinster League

Shelmaliers travelled to Borris to take on Mount Leinster Rangers in the opening game of the Leinster League on Wednesday evening last.

Playing against the wind, Shels quickly got in the lead courtesy of a free converted by Chris McGrath and a goal well taken by Des Kehoe. The home team got back in the game at this stage scoring 1-3 in the next 8 minutes. Shels got  further points from Joe Kelly (0-2) and Chris McGrath (0-1F) but the home team continued their good form and amassed 2-9 which meant we went into the break 6 points down.

A stronger more determined team came out in the second half with renewed determination and fighting spirit. With scores from Joe Kelly (0-2) Des Kehoe (1-1) Chris McGrath (0-1) and Ciaran O’Shaughnessy (0-1) we quickly drew level with the opposition. On the stroke of full time, the referee who had really let the game flow,  awarded one of his rare frees, and Joe Kelly made no mistake and fired it over the net for us to go into the lead. Unfortunately on the rebound, the home team found just enough space to pop over the equaliser and really a draw was a fair result for both teams. Final score Shels 3-10 to 2-13.
Best on the day were Ciaran Walsh, Alan Griffith, Seamie Harding, Des Kehoe & Denis Kelly.

Hard luck to Tommy Barron, who pulled a ham string early in the match. We wish him a speedy recovery.

Team: Ciaran Walsh, John Kelly, Aidan Murphy, Seamie Harding, Mick Kelly, Clive Lawler, Conor Walsh, David Cloney, Ciaran O’Shaughnessy (0-1), Colin Kehoe, Alan Griffith, Joe Kelly 1-5,2F), Tommy Barron, Des Kehoe (2-1) and Chris McGrath (0-3F). Subs introduced Ibar Murphy and Dennis Kelly.

Note: The second game of this league is in Hollymount on Easter Monday at 4.00 PM where we meet Clara, Co. Kilkenny. All support welcome
