The adult football league got under way last weekend. The Senior team played Clongeen, the second team played Cushinstown and the third team played Rosslare’s second team. With 3 wins out of 3, it was a very successful start to the league.
Senior Shels 1-9, Clongeen 1-5
A big battle was expected because Clongeen won the Senior Championship in 2007. However, Shels started brightly with Joe Kelly and Derek Walsh in very good form. Early points from Joe, Derek, Garret Dunne and Colin Redmond gave Shels the lead. However, Clongeen then took over and did all the running. By half time it was 0-4 apiece.
In the second half it was an even battle for the first ten minutes. However, points from Terry Gainfort (0-2) and 1-1 from Derek Walsh swung the game in favour of the Shels with 10 minutes remaining. But Clongeen were not finished and, just like in the first half, they piled on the pressure. Alan Griffith lifted the siege with 2 excellent points but Clongeen came very close when a late goal was disallowed for a square infringement.
