The finals of the Willie O Leary cup hurling competition took place on Hollymount on Sunday last, with a very large number of players and parents present.
The Willie O Leary hurling league is run each year for boys and girls in our local National schools and is aimed at promoting and fostering the playing of hurling among the younger population of the parish. The cup final was between Kilkenny and Offaly teams with the side’s level after a skilful and thrilling hurling contest and extra time needed to separate the sides, with Kilkenny prevailing by the narrowest of margins. While this competition was taking place their under 12 and under 14 counterparts were also in action on the other pitches, with the under 12s overcoming Erin’s Isle GAA club from Dublin and the under 14 taking on our neighbours from Crossabeg/Ballymurn. County minor hurling stars Joe Kelly and James Gordon had the honour of presenting the cup and medals to the victorious Kilkenny team. When the hurling action was over all the players, mentors and parents were treated to a magnificent meal in the complex which was excellently prepared by Danny and Trish Potter and their many helpers. Many thanks to all who made it a great day of hurling, in the club.
