Junior Footballers reach final

Shelmaliers 1-11 – Monageer 2-4
Junior Football League, June 5, 2008. Venue Monageer On what turned out to be a rain soaked pitch the Shels ground out a well deserved victory that was generously assisted by some terrible wides from the home team.

In the first half, in bright sunshine, Monageer kicked 7 wides from play and frees, many of these in very scorable positions. The Shels on the other hand kicked seven points with four of these coming from frees. Despite the wasted chances Monageer scored two good goals in the opening period to stay in touch with the over-the-water men, but it must also be mentioned that the Monageer keeper made two excellent saves to deny Mark Tobin and Dessie Kehoe during the same period. One of the highlights of th efirst half was a glorious left-footed point from 40 yards out from Daren Malone who was the dominant player in the first period. The score at half-time was 0-7 to 2-0 for the Shels. As the rain came down in the second half the Shels continued to press forward down the hill and scored the first two points before Monageer responded with a point of their own. Then the Shels got their opportunistic goal through Mark Tobin followed by two more points to establish a 5 point lead. Subs Dennis Kelly and Brian Doyle added scores for the visitors as the sides exchanged points for the rest of the match with the Shels holding on for a 4 point win. Best for the Shels were Daren Malone, Ciaran O'Shaughnessy, Dessie Kehoe, Cormac Smith and Mark Tobin.
