Second half display key to success.
Date: Wed. 29th August Venue: St. Patrick’s Park Opponents: Bunclody
Competition: Junior C Football Championship
Full time score: (Shels) 0-18 (Opp.) 2-6
The Shelmaliers qualified for the county semi-final but still have one game in hand to be played against Bannow-Ballymitty Fri. 7th September. The first half was very lack-lustre with many of the Shels young players very tired after just returning from their Graduation dance. Bunclody were well in the game and were very dominant at centre field and centre forward. While the Shels were on top with a good point from Denis Kelly and 3 good frees from Stephen Cash, Bunclody responded with a well taken goal and a point from play. The last ten minutes of the half was equal with points from James Murphy, S. Cash and Andre O Brien while Bunclody got 0-2 to leave the half-time score at 0-7 to 1-3.
In the second half the Shels gradually woke up. Stephen Cash was having a very good game and scored 4 more points. Seamus Harding was introduced for the tired Ciaran O’Shaughnessy and quickly scored a good point. His fitness and good running caused a lot of problems for Bunclody for the rest of the game. Niall Kelly, now operating at centre back took control there and Donal Power was very solid at full back. With Denis Kelly and Conor Walsh now taking over at mid-field, the Shels controlled the game and ran out easy winners on a score of 0-18 to 2-6.
