U14 Hurling Championship V St. Martins Wed. 27 June 2007. Venue: Piercestown.
A win was necessary on this trip to Piercestown to keep our ambition of a County semi-final alive.
First Half: The first score took some time to come, as the opening exchanges were somewhat listless on a very heavy evening. However once the Shels got that first score, a goal from Glen Murphy, they never looked like being headed. There followed three well-taken points from 65s from Conor Tobin, a further Murphy goal and cracking point from the lively Shane Bierney left the half-time score 2-4 to 0-1.
Second half: The second half was a dull affair which was however enlivened by some well-taken Shelmalier scores and some good combined play from the Over the Water men. The rampant Glen Murphy added a further three goals, while Shane Bierney, Dean Corrigan and Craig McCabe contributed fine points. Conor Tobin landed a rather fortuitous goal from a 65 to leave the final score at 6-8 to 1-1. Our backs, while not overly stretched, were solid and reliable throughout. Pádraic O’ Leary manned the square powerfully and there were strong performances on the flanks from A. J. Lehane and Eoghan Fitzgerald. Dean Corrigan and Craig McCabe got through an immense amount of hurling while the scoreline reflects the effectiveness of our front men.
