Our under 14 footballers gain a hard earned 4-6 to 3-4 victory over a very strong and determined Sarsfields side.
In a most competitive and compelling game played on Wednesday evening last (23rd May), in Pairc Charman, our under 14 footballers gained a hard earned 4-6 to 3-4 victory over a very strong and determined Sarsfields side. Craig McCabe got the black and amber side off to the best of starts with a great goal after 5 minutes and corner forward Jake Kehoe doubled the score when firing to the Sarsfields net after some great team play by his fellow forwards. Not to be outdone, the Sars soon replied scoring 1-2 without reply to leave the narrowest of margins between the sides after 15 minutes. Craig McCabe extended the Shels' lead with two well taken points, but the Sarsfields again came back with a goal and a point of their own. A.J. Lehane showed his nerve when ordered by the ref. to take a penalty for the second time, slotting it into the opposite corner of the net at his second attempt, to leave the visitors leading by 3-2 to 2-3 at half time.
Niall Tobin was fast off the mark on the resumption with a point in the opening minutes of the new half. This spurred on the Sarsfields who scored a point and a goal to lead by a single point after 15 minutes. The true determination of this team was then very much in evidence when holding the Sarsfields scoreless for the remainder of the match and firing over a total of 1-3 with Shane Bierney, Glen Murphy and Niall Tobin on the mark, to leave a five point margin between the sides at the final whistle. The Shelmaliers defence played very well throughout with Paraic O Leary. A.J. Lehane, Eoghan Fitzgerald, Eoin O Leary, Jack Murphy, Kevin Byrne and goalie Neil Rossiter playing very steadily. Apart from the scorers, others who played well in the forwards were Mark Mythen, Conor Tobin, Simon Murphy and Damian Drennan.
