The Shelmalier Intermediate footballers had an easy 2-14 to 1-3 victory over the Shamrocks in the first round of the league championship on the 7th May played in Taghmon. The Shels started slowly and were 1-2 to 0-0 behind after 15 minutes. Shamrocks created 3 goal chances in this period and scored their goal from a penalty, a point from play and one from a free. The Shels then got on the score sheet with a point from Terry Gainfort and then a great goal from the same player from about 25 yards. Brian Malone, who was excellent at mid-field scored a point, and then Derek Walsh and Terry scored two points each. The Shels were now well on top and further scores from Chris Gordon (point), a second goal from Terry after a great flick pass by Brian Malone and a point after a good run by Ibar Murphy left the half time score at 2-8 to 1-2.
In the second half the Shamrocks went strongly at the Shelmaliers. The Shels had to defend tightly and their character was tested on many occasions after some robust tackles. Mark Walsh cleared one certain goal at one end while Terry Gainfort maintained his form on the other end by scoring a further 6 points (four frees). This was a more scrappy half with Shamrocks only scoring one point from a free. While the Shamrocks made a good start, the Shelmaliers were by far the better team but still have a lot of work to do before the next round.
