U14 Shield Final V Oulart

Shels U 14 boys travelled to Patrick’s park last weekend for their Division 1 Shield Final against Oulart/ The Ballagh.

The game was fast and tough with only 1 point at half time, but Oulart came out the strongest in the second half and were the winners on the day. Keep the heads up boys, you all did your club, parents and yourselves proud.

National Schools Double

Camogie girls and Hurling boys do the double.

There was great celebrations in Wexford Park on both Monday and Wednesday evenings of last week when the camogie girls and hurling boys from our Nationals schools completed the Rackard League double in victories over St Martins and Ferns respectively. The outstanding girls were always in control and ran out easy winners, however, it wasn’t as easy for the boys who put in an outstanding first half performance in the first half and had to defend with great might to win by the narrowest of margins. It’s a great achievement for all the pupils and teachers of our National schools and we offer them our congratulations them on winning the hurling and camogie double.

Rackard League Report

Wexford was the venue for the 2014/2015 final of the cumin na mbunscoil b final between Ferns and Castlebridge.

The Castlebridge team was made up of boys who play with the Shelmalier club and represented the schools of Screen, Castlebridge and Curracloe. The boys were very well prepared under Miss Amanda Bolger a major driving force behind the hurling. The game was a cracker with a display of class hurling, hooking, blocking and a spirit which could not be broken. The game itself had everything   And in fairness to a very good ferns side never threw the kitchen sink at Castlebridge. The first fifteen minutes were very close with the scores even at 0.04 pts each, a switch in personnel then proved very fruitful Aodhan Byrne went back to man the defence and Tiernan Malone moved to midfield  where himself and Cian Doyle  began to get on top.in this period to half time Castlebridge  added 1.04 without reply. Paul Hearne was chief scorer with 0.06 Aodhan scored a point Joe Devereux got a great goal, Sean Cullen scored a wonder point from the side-line. Ben made a brilliant save in that first half with the backs defending like demons. The score at half time was 1.08 to 0.04. Castlebridge were unlucky also to lose Conor Roche to injury but his replacement played the game of his life. Ferns now with wind advantage piled on the pressure and little by little began to reel in Castlebridge. Paul Hearne scores a point to steady the ship. The last ten minutes was frantic with the halfback line of Ryan, Tiernan and Mark majestic. The full back line of Robbie, David and Sean Og defended as if their lives depended on it. The man between the sticks had a mighty game and try as ferns   Did they could never get there. Thomas   Aaron Corey and Barry when called upon played their part also.in the dying moments Castlebridge had a goal disallowed which didn’t matter in the end with Castlebridge winning on a score line of 1.09 to 1.08 .The scenes of joy and emotion were brilliant and the boys deserve huge credit doing what the girls had done two days earlier making it a famous double. The boys and girls now look forward to a celebration night where they will receive that valued and elusive Nicky Rackard medal. This win makes up for all the many finals that have been lost over the years and it’s now look forward to next year to do it all again. Pics to follow.

Willie O’Leary Cup Finals

We had two cracking finals that went down to the wire.

The sunshine was out, the crowds came and they weren’t disappointed.  The boys and girls served up top class hurling with all the skills on view. The shield final was won by Hannah Hearne’s  team with the captain leading by example and winning the girl player of the final. The best boy award was won by Aodhan Byrne who was the main scorer on the day for a team who gave it everything to the end. The willie O’ Leary cup was fought for and the result was in doubt till the end. Ciara Banville led her charges and by half time looked to be well in command but Paul Hearne and his troops got up a head of steam and got there with a few points to spare at the final whistle. The girl player of the final was Aoibhe Murphy and Ben McAleese won the boys. The presentation followed with Emmett O’ Leary representing the family. Martin Doyle and Noel Feeney both spoke and thanked a lot of people. This was followed by a photo for the paper. Everybody went away happy with hurling being the winner. All the boys and girls got refreshments provided by Sheila. The attention now turns to the Rackard league finals with a lot of the same boys and girls involved. This competition is very popular and it’s a date to put in your diary for 2016.shels St/ Ibars abu
