Shels Girls Represent Wexford at U12 Leinster Blitz

Leanne Corrigan, Aoife Birney and Gemma Fox represented Shelmalier Ladies FC on the Wexford teams in Carlow on Monday June 1st.

The panel was divided into two teams, Wexford played in Division 1 and Loch Gorman in Division 4.  Leanne started mid-field for Wexford who played Dublin A, Laois A, Kildare A and Meath A.  They were unsuccessful in their games however they were only narrowly defeated by Laois and Kildare.

Gemma wore the No 9 jersey and Aoife the No.5, for Loch Gorman who defeated Laois B in their first game, they came up against tougher opposition in The Lily Whites, in the second game but got away from them in the 2nd half.  They played Carlow in the third game, which they also won and so qualified for the Division final where they came up against The Lily Whites again.  Similar to the first game it was very even in the first half and scores were level at half time, however, Loch Gorman played great in the second half and won the final 4-5 to 1- 2.  Congratulations to all involved on the day, the girls had a good day in brilliant sunshine.

U12 have great day out at Ballygarret Blitz

Shelmalier Under 12’s went to Ballygarret on Sunday May 31st to take part in a blitz organised by Realt na Mara, Ballygarret.

10 players in all travelled for a 10-a-side tournament, they were, Linzi Lanigan- Captain for the day, Gemma Fox, Katie McGuire, Chloe Mahon, Amy Doyle, Kara Doyle, Leanne Corrigan, Roisin Doolin, Susan Birney-Gossage and Vicky Connell.

The played Ballygarret A in their first game and were defeated, then they played Clonee and were victorious.  They played Adamstown, in the Semi-Final and put on a fine display to qualify for the A final.

However it was evident that having no subs for the day took it toll and despite a valiant effort they went down to a strong Ballygarret A Team.

Very Well done to all ten players who played very well in the heat and glorious sunshine.  Thanks to Sharon, our selector and also to Joe, Mick and Myles who helped out on the day, and to the parents who travelled to support their daughters.

U12s start campaign with a win !

Shelmalier Girls Under 12, played Clonee on Thursday May 7th in a very windy Hollymount.

Clonee won the toss and played with the wind and scored a point in the first and second minute from 45’s,the first of which was due to Susan’s kick out going up in the air and back out over the end line, such was the force of the wind.

In  the eight minute Shels got their first score when Gemma Fox received a pass from Leanne Corrigan and put the ball over the bar.  Our back line, which included Lindsey Lanigan, Aoife Birney and Kelsy Daly, who was then replace by Vicky Connell, aided by a vey able Chloe Mahon at Centre Back, and a very effective Katie McGuire and Aoife Hayes at halfback worked very hard, our Goalie, Susan Birney-Gossage made some great saves, however in the 11th minute Clonee score their only goal of the game, followed by a point two minutes later. In the 15th minute Gemma scored our first goal, and in the 20th minute she got a second goal following passes from Katie McGuire to Enya Byrne. Each team scored once again in this half leaving the score at the interval 2 -2 to Shelmaliers and 1 -4 to Clonee.

After the break Shelmaliers had the wind at their backs and despite some great play and defending from Clonee, Gemma added another goal and a point using the support of forwards Amy Doyle, Chloe Forde and Rebecca Carter, and Kate Stafford added a point leaving the end score 3 Goals and 4 points to Shels, 1 goal and 4 points to Clonee.  Megan Murphy and Shelly Roche replaced Chloe Forde and Rebecca Carter and played their part in the victory in their first U 12 Champioship match of 2009. Well done girls.

Community Games U12 victory for Castlebridge/Crossabeg Girls

Congratulations to the Girls and mentors of Castlebridge/Crossabeg  on winning the U12 Community Games girls Football title

The Community Games U12 girls football final saw Castlebridge/Crossabeg meet Bree/Davidstown. Castlebridge/Crossabeg had beaten Kilmore in the first round and Clonard in the semi-final to gain their place in the final, while Bree/Davidstown having a Bye in the first round had beaten Tintern in their semi-final.

Both teams began with great determination from the first whistle but it was Castlebridge/Crossabeg who got the first score with a great point from Megan Power.

Amy Banville added another point to their score line minutes later before Bree/Davidstown managed to get the ball through the Castlebridge/Crossabeg defence and score their first goal. Bree went on to score a further 1-4 in the first half with Castlebridge/Crossabeg only managing to reply with a point from Louise Murphy and a goal from Gemma Fox leaving the half-time score 2-4 to 1-3 in favour of Bree/Davidstown. The second-half was a much more one-sided affair with Castlebridge/Crossabeg having made some changes in their line out gaining most of the play. The soon converted their ball position to a score and although Bree/Davidatown fought back they couldn’t manage to get the ball past the Castlebridge half-back line where Alice Mahon excelled having moved out from full back at half-time. Castlebridge/Crossabeg had a number of scoring opportunities as the game continued and although they had a few wides, they scored 2 well taken goals, one form Noeleen Shanahan and the other from Amy Banville to finish the game as County Champions on a score of 3-4 to 2-4.
