Minor Leinster victory

For Club member Niamh Walsh, congratulations

Niamh played at left corner-back on the Wexford Minor team who defeated Kilkenny 3-12 to 2-10 in the Leinster championship final in Naas on Saturday last.  This is a fantastic achievement.

Niamh is only the seventh player in the history of the club to win a Leinster championship medal in this grade which was introduced in 1997.

U14 camogie

Last week was a busy week for the squad, starting on a high note but ending on an unfortunate low.

With a victory over Rathnure in the League semi-final 3-2 to 3-1.  On Monday at the Co Board meeting we tossed with St Martin’s for home venue and were successful, the final took place on Saturday last.  Our opponents showed just why they ae the best team in teh county with a powerful performance, with our girls fading rapidly after Sarah Harding-Kenny scored an equalising point in the seventh minute, with the visitors ahead at half-time 2-7 to 0-1, and going on to add another 4-9 without reply.  Our girls should be very proud of their efforts as they contested two finals plus a semi-final in the top grade with a young squad including many U12s, so it was yet another promising year on the whole.  Thanks to the players and mentors Mick Lanigan, Mag Murphy and Emma Carroll for their dedication and commitment over the season.  Also thank you to Sandy Carr, Michelle Harding, Niamh Potter and Eadaoin Fitzgerald who presented the girls their Féile runners-up medals after the game.  Refreshments were enjoyed afterwards in Hotel Curracloe.

Team:  Ciara Banville, Alison Doyle, Caitlin Carroll, Becky Halligan, Caitriona Kinsella, Chloe Mythen, Sarah Whelan, Sarah Harding-Kenny (joint capt, 0-1), Molly Byrne, Ailis Neville, Mikaela Lanigan (joint capt), Aine Fitzgerald, Andrea Fielding, Lauren Murphy, Aoife Fielding.  Subs:  Hannah Hearne for Andrea Fielding (32), Aoife Doyle for Whelan (44), Aoibhe Murphy for Halligan (44), also Catie Byrne, Nicole Harding-Kenny and Abbie Devereux (inj).

now advance to County League final on Saturday, September 6th at 2.30 pm in Hollymount

Ibar’s got off to a fine start winning the first free taken by Mikaela Lanigan, it landed in the square, went wide off a Rathnure back, giving us a ’30 taken by M Lanigan, Mikaela was unfortunate.  But Ibar’s forward kept up their good work, and Aoife Fielding batted in a fantastic goal the first score of the game in the 9th minute, giving Ibar’s the lead.  Rathnure followed when they  pointed a free in the 12th minute.  After a fantastic solo run from Ailis Neville in the 23rd minute, her strike was taken down by Rathnure defence, giving us a ’30.  From the sideline it looked like Lauren netted the ball from the ’30, and Mikaela Lanigan was on goal mouth to  to assist aswell.  Our mid-fielders Molly and Sarah covered a lot of ground  and kept the ball moving, but Rathnure got possession putting a lot of pressure on our defence, with Caitlin Carroll making a fantastic clearance in the 25thminute with help on hand as always from Alison Doyle and Becky Halligan with their determination to clear the ball out.  Lauren was on target scoring a point from a ’30.  Ciara Banville in goal made a fantastic save and cleared the ball out, but Rathnure got a free, and scored a goal in the 29th minute, halftime ended after 37 mins of play (which left parents & mentors wondering, is it 25 or 30 mins a-side)  Ibar’s  led 2-1 to 1-1.

In the first minute of the second half Sarah Harding-Kenny was fouled on two occasions, with Caitlin taking the first free and Lauren Murphy taking the second one scoring another fantastic goal. Lauren pointed another free in the 38th minute.  Rathnure were awarded a free in the 40th minute but it was well cleared out by Ibar’s defenders Caitriona, Chloe and Sarah Whelan.  In the 45th minute immense pressure on Ibar’s defenders, and Ciara Banville once again made a fantastic clearance, but Rathnure didn’t give up and in the 52nd minute they scored a goal from a ’30 leaving Ibar’s leading by 4 points.  Hannah Hearne went on for Andrea Fielding (55) and Ibar’s forwards Ailis Mikaela Aine put the pressure on but were unfortunate.  In the 29th minute Rathnure succeeded to score a goal, leaving only a 1 point lead with 1 minute to go.  Ibar’s girls and mentors were delighted to hear the final whistle and realise their victory over Rathnure.  It is a credit to the girls and their mentors how much they have improved over the season as a team, and also a lot of these girls played the Ladies football shield final on Saturday, congrats to them on their draw, and we wish them best wishes in the replay.

Team as follows;  Ciara Banville, Alison Doyle, Caitlin Carroll, Becky Halligan, Caitriona Kinsella, Chloe Mythen, Sarah Whelan, Sarah Harding-Kenny(joint capt), Molly Byrne, Ailis Neville, Mikaela Lanigan (joint capt), Aine Fitzgerald, Andrea Fielding, Lauren Murphy (2-2, 2-1 frees 0-1 ’30) and Aoife Fielding (1-0).  Subs:  Aoibhe Murphy, Aoife Doyle (sick), Hannah Hearne for Andrea Fielding, Catie Byrne Abbie Devereux (inj) and Nicole Harding-Kenny.  Team Manager Mick Lanigan, mentors Mag Murphy and Emma Carroll.

Secure semi-final place after great victory over Oulart/The Ballagh last night

in the first play-off game, 4-4 to 0-2 after a great game played by all.  Lauren Murphy rattled the net opening the scores for our side after receiving a lovely handpass from Aoife Fielding, Ibar’s kept on top with a point from Mikaela Lanigan, followed with a point from Sarah Harding-Kenny.  Oulart pointed a free in the 12th minute.  Ibar’s following goal came from team work from our defenders Alison, Caitlin, Becky, Caitriona, Chloe & Aine, which followed to mid-fielder Molly Byrne on to Mikaela Lanigan where all the forwards ran in after the ball, Sarah Harding-Kenny batted the ball into the net.  Great team work has progressed in this young U14 team.  Oulart got a ’30 as ball went off our backs, which followed with another ’30 for them, this was well cleared by our defence team, leaving the half-time score 2-2 to 0-1.

Resuming the second half with some changes as Hannah Hearne went into goal, and Ciara Banville taking up position of corner forward, for Aoibhe Murphy.  Our next goal came from Lauren Murphy, after great passing coming from Caitlin to Ailis to Ciara. Then Ciara Banville rattled the net from a very tight angle, a point followed from Mikaela Lanigan, and another point from Lauren Murphy in the 20th minute, leaving a full time score 4-4 to 0-2.

Team Manager Mick Lanigan and mentors Mag Murphy & Emma Carroll were delighted with the girls overall performance.  They have progressed so well since their first meeting of Oulart/The Ballagh on St Patrick’s day.

Team as follows;  Ciara Banville (1-0), Alison Doyle, Caitlin Carroll, Abbie Devereux, Becky Halligan, Caitriona Kinsella, Chloe Mythen, Aine Fitzgerald, Sarah Harding-Kenny (1-1), Molly Byrne, Ailis Neville, Mikaela Lanigan (0-2), Aoife Fielding, Aoibhe Murphy for Hannah Hearne, Lauren Murphy (2-1).  Subs:  Andrea Fielding for Aoife Fielding, Aoife Doyle, Catie Byrne for A Devereux and Nicole Harding-Kenny.

The girls now look forward to the League semi-final on Thursday, August 28th, this date is still to be confirmed.  The 2nd play-off game will be played tomorrow night, (Aug 20th) Glynn/Barntown v Oulart/The Ballagh.  Then our opponents will be decided.

U16 camogie update

The Under-16s had a busy week

playing two more championship matches with mixed fortunes of a loss and a win. However, the latter outcome ensures that we are through to the Wexford People Premier championship semi-final with one game in hand, so well done to everyone involved.

First up for the girls was a home game against Rathnure on Sunday evening last which they lost by 5-8 to 2-3. Some of our crew had been in Oakwood the day before, and a combination of sickness and tiredness didn’t help our cause against a team who look like being the favourites for outright honours on what we have seen so far.

Rathnure picked off the first two points before we had the boost of a well-taken solo goal from Sarah Harding-Kenny who sprinted down the centre and finished with aplomb in the 13th minute. It only took the visitors 60 seconds to draw level though, and they went on to lead by 2-5 to 1-0 at half-time. The margin widened to nine on the re-start before Shauna Kelly pointed a free and Sarah Harding-Kenny set up her first cousin, Jessie, for a goal less than five minutes in to reduce the gap to 2-6 to 2-1.

The margin remained at five midway through the half, with Mikaela Lanigan grabbing a point, but Rathnure hit three goals in the last quarter and our sole response was a Shauna Kelly point.

Team: Ailis Neville; Anna Whelan, Sadbh McCarthy, Chloe Mythen; Molly Byrne, Larah Campbell, Megan Scallan; Siobhán Doolan, Shauna Kelly (capt., 0-2, 1 free); Jessie Harding (1-0), Sarah Harding-Kenny (1-0), Fiona Kinsella; Lauren Murphy, Mikaela Lanigan (0-1), Eleanor Lacey. Subs. – Caitlin Carroll for McCarthy (42), Julia Halpin for Murphy (45), Thea Kehoe for Kinsella (52).

After beating them already at home, the girls knew that a victory away to Oulart-The Ballagh yesterday morning (Saturday) would make sure of a semi-final spot along with Rathnure, St. Martin’s and Craanford-Monaseed. And they duly delivered with a 4-6 to 2-5 win which is a fine achievement considering that every single one of the panel bar one (Shauna Kelly) will be Under-16 again next year.

This was the proverbial game of two halves as the wind had a big bearing on proceedings. We availed of it first and, while it took a while for our forwards to get their bearings and aim for the far post, eventually the scores came that pushed us into a commanding 4-4 to nil half-time lead. We got those four points in the first eleven minutes courtesy of Shauna Kelly, Zoe O’Leary, Shauna again from a free and Jessie Harding.

Jessie was deployed at corner-forward and she had a field day in the second quarter, grabbing a hat-trick of goals between the 14th and 20th minutes after good deliveries from out the field. Our fourth goal came from a Shauna Kelly penalty just before the break, with referee John O’Rourke confirming that her shot had crossed the line after being blocked.

However, the first-half also brought its disappointments as corner-back Chloe Mythen was forced off early on with a leg injury, and Sarah Harding-Kenny quickly joined her on the sideline after shipping a blow to the hand. It was a battle to preserve our lead after the break but our backs stood up well to the task, with Molly Byrne, Larah Campbell and Anna Whelan all to the fore.

Oulart-The Ballagh had pulled back three points before Shauna Kelly converted a free nearly ten minutes in, but we conceded 2-1 midway through the half and that made our task that bit harder. We managed to weather the storm quite well though despite the fact that many girls were tired after playing Under-16 football the previous night, and another free from Shauna only drew one response from the home side as we ended up victors by 4-6 to 2-5.

Team: Ailis Neville; Anna Whelan, Sadbh McCarthy, Chloe Mythen; Molly Byrne, Larah Campbell, Megan Scallan; Zoe O’Leary (0-1), Sarah Harding-Kenny; Siobhán Doolan, Shauna Kelly (capt., 1-4, 1-0 pen., 0-3 frees), Fiona Kinsella; Eleanor Lacey, Mikaela Lanigan, Jessie Harding (3-1). Subs. – Lauren Murphy for Mythen, inj. (17), Julia Halpin for Harding-Kenny, inj. (20), Thea Kehoe for Kinsella (49).

We have one away game to be re-fixed away to Craanford-Monaseed before the county semi-final on September 6th, with the decider down for a fortnight later
