Shelmalier 4-13, Crossabeg/Ballymurn 1-08
Shelmalier & Crossabeg/Ballymurn ladies served up an entertaining hours football in their Div 1 league game in Ballymurn on Monday last.
Katie Redmond’s opening point was quickly cancelled out by points from Geraldine Doolan, Ceara O’Brien and a brace of from Leona Tector with Amanda Scallan replying for the Ballymurn girls. There was some excellent football served up by both teams with Deirdre Fox and Laura Corrigan pulling off some fine saves at either end. Shauna Murphy and Tector extended Shelmaliers lead before Redmond pointed from a free to leave the score 0-6 to 0-4. The Shels response was swift with a Tector pointed free and Murphy was at the end of a sweeping Shels move to finish superbly and gave Corrigan no chance in the Crossabeg goal. She followed up quickly with another major a minute later to open up an eight point gap before Redmond replied with a brace of pouts to leave the half time score 2-6 to 0-6 in favour of Shelmaliers.
Kellie Kearney opened the second half scoring with 1-1 in the opening eight minutes before the Crossabeg/ Ballymurn girls hit a purple patch scoring 1-2 in the next three minutes courtesy of Ailisha Cullen 1-1 and a Tara Moloney point to leave the score 3-7 to 1-8. Shelmalier sensing that control of the game was slipping away from them with some powerful play from Siobhan Cummins, Elaine Barlow, Amanda Scallan, Lorraine O’Connor and Tara Moloney particularly prominent upped the tempo and replied with 1-5 courtesy of points from Shelly Doyle (2), Leona Tector (2), Shauna Murphy and a splendidly taken goal from Leanne Corrigan to leave the final score Shelmalier 4-13 Crossabeg/Ballymurn 1-08.
This game had everything, pace, excellent movement, good defensive play and missed chances by both sides.
