Minor Football Championship.

Shelmalier minor football team continued their defense of their county title in impressive fashion with a well earned 1:15 to 9pts victory over a fancied Ballinastraw Gaels

(Killanerin/Tara Rocks) outfit in Hollymount on Friday night last. In ideal sunny conditions the home team was quick out of the blocks and after only four minutes they had three points on the board. Despite the visitors coming more into the game the Shels lads continued to impress and by half time led 9pts to 3pts with the forward players in particular showing impressive accuracy from both placed balls and from general play. The second half began with, as expected, the Ballinastraw team pushing hard for scores and they had the lead down to just three points by the mid way mark. But as has happened earlier in the year on their way to victory in The Byrne Cup, this team has great character and yet again when the questions were asked these lads had the answers. Three long range points were followed by a rather fortuitous goal from a 30 metre free and from there to the end the home team was well in control. A really good win with best on the day, in defense Eoghan Nolan, Graham Staples, Simon Donohue and Neal Rossiter, while James Cash. Niall Tobin, Simon Murphy and Kevin O Connor impressed in attack.

Great win in the Jim Byrne Cup.
