Junior Football V Tara Rocks 2016

The Shelmalier junior footballers also completed the group stages of the championship when they took on Tara Rocks in Farmleigh on Sunday last.

Stephen McGuire was off the mark for the Shelmaliers in the second minute with a well taken point and Chris Gordon was narrowly wide with a goal scoring change after 5 minutes. Goalie Aodhan Foley made a number of great saves as the game progressed and he was ably assisted in defence by Eoghan Fitzgerald, Cathal Gaule, Conor Hearne and Cian Manley to keep the Tara Rocks at bay on many occasions. A well worked move involving Kevin O Leary and Eoin O Leary saw Niall Murphy pointing from 30 yards with David Shiggins taking a well-placed point from a free shortly afterwards. The second half saw a great improvement from the Shelmalier team; however, Tara Rocks got their first goal in the 10th minute when a long ranger free deflected was to the Shelmalier net. The spirited Shelmalier side were not deterred and when Paul McCleane and Chris Gordon combined they delivered the ball to full forward Kevin O Leary who duly dispatched it to the Tara Rocks net. Niall Murphy and Stephen McGuire got Shelmaliers last two points. Everybody in the Shelmalier club wish Paul McCleane a speedy recovery from a knock he received during the game.
The championship action returns to hurling over the coming weekend with final and important matches for both the senior and junior hurlers.  The senior hurlers take on the Rapparees in Wexford Park on Saturday 27th August at 3-30pm and the junior hurler travel to Cushinstown the same day when they take on Gusserane at 6-30pm. Both teams are asking for your support.
