Hurling Championship 5th Round

The Shelmalier senior hurlers played the 5th & final round of the championship group stages against the Rapparees in Wexford Park on Saturday last.

After an enthralling match the black and amber side won on a score line of 2-17 to 1-16. The Shelmalier team show great energy and commitment from the throw in and they showed this commitment with Brian Doyle opening the scoring for the Shelmaliers in the 2nd minute. Brian Malone and Ciaran O Shaughnessy combined to get their second point after 10 minutes. Further points from Conor Hearne, Joe Kelly, Brian Malone, Ciaran O Shaughnessy gave the Shelmaliers the lead 0-7 to 0-6 after 20 minutes. The Shelmalier supporters rose to their feet when Glen Malone collected the ball in mid field before racing through to fire to the roof of the Rapparees net. Two frees from Joe Kelly saw the Shelmaliers lead by 1-9 to 0-7 at half time. The Rapparees come out very strong in the third quarter but 3 points from Joe Kelly frees kept the Shelmaliers in the lead and they scored their second goal in the 15th minute when Conor Hearne raced through the Rapparees defence to score. The final quarter was an evenly contest with the Shelmaliers winning by a 4 point margin
