Junior Hurling V Ferns, Report

Shelmaliers overcome Ferns.

In an exciting game of hurling where both sides showed great determination and hurling skills the Shelmalier junior hurlers eventually got the better of Ferns by 4-14 to 0-12 in their league encounter played in Ferns on Friday evening last. Aodhan Foley and Jody Donohoe got the Shelmaliers side off to an early lead, while goalie Paul McCleane was outstanding at the other end stopping many Ferns shots on goal in the early stages of the game. Full forward Stephen Whelan got his sides first goal in the 10th minute with further points from Johnny Campbell and Brian Doyle before Jody Donohoe scored his sides second goal direct from a long range free in the 25th minute to leave a have time score of Shelmalier 2-7 Ferns 0-5. Ferns came very strong on the resumption but great defending from Eoghan Fitzgerald, Kevin O Leary and Eoin O Leary in the full back line ensured their scoring was kept to a minimum. When Aodhan Foley got his side’s third goal in the 15th minute following great work by Stephen Rossiter the match was effectively over as a contest. The Shelmalier senior hurlers take on local rivals St Martins in Piercestown this evening Tuesday starting at 8pm and your support would be appreciated.
