Following their convincing victory over the Sarsfields the previous week the Shelmalier senior footballers travelled to Cushinstown on Sunday last when took on the challenge of a strong Gusserane side in the championship second round. The Shelmaliers were slow to get into the game with Gusserane building a four point lead before the Shelmaliers got their first score from Barry O Connor in the 13th minute. The sides were level by the 25th minute with fine points from Glen Malone, Barry O Connor and Arnie Murphy. Gusserane regained the initiative before half time as they led by a single point at half time. The Shelmaliers were soon on level terms on the resumption with Barry O Connor again on target with an excellent point. With the game on a knifes edge Gusserane pushed in front after 10 minutes, but the black and amber men were not to be deterred and with fine free taking from both Barry O Connor and Aidan Murphy the Shelmaliers ran out worthy winners by the narrowest of margins 0-10 to 0-9.
