The Shelmalier junior hurlers took on Taghmon in the county junior hurling final in Wexford Park on Saturday last and after a tremendous game the Taghmon men won on a score line of 2-6 to 3-16.
The final score line did not accurately reflect this match as the sides were level 2-6 to 1-9 after 40min of play but a late Taghmon rally saw them collect the cup. Jody Donohoe opened the scoring for the Shelmaliers and Cathal Gaule and Michael Feeney points level the scores after 15 minutes. A great run from deep by Michael Feeney saw the wing forward fire to the roof of the Taghmon net to again tie the sides after 20 minutes and Liam Rockett extended the Shelmaliers lead with a point a minute later. Conor Byrne’s long range free just before half time saw the side’s level 1-5 each at half time. Taghmon soon replied with a goal on the resumption but fine defending from goalie Paul McCleane, Graham Staples, Eoin O Leary, Alan Griffith, Eoghan Fitzgerald, Aaron O Neill and Cathal Gaule kept the Taghmon attackers at bay. The Shelmaliers forwards soon began to move the ball with a Stephen Whelan and a Liam Rocket goal saw the black and amber side take a two point lead after 10minutes. A serious collision of players resulted in corner back Eoghan Fitzgerald having to leave the field of play in the 12 minute of the second half. As the match entered the final quarter the Taghmon team began to dominate, they took control of the game and won the match.
