U12 Football Final – report

Oylgate was the venue last weekend for the shield final v the Starlights.

The Shels played with the wind early on and dominated but it didn’t reflect on the score board. Attack after attack was foiled by a brilliant goalkeeper. The Shels were dominating midfield with Cian and Jack. Niall Cormac, Ryan, Brian and Luke C kept attacking nonstop. After the first third the sides remained scoreless. Luke R was moved from the backs to the forwards for the second third and came up trumps with two good points. Robbie, Denis Eoin, Shane K and Shane J plus our captain and goal man Daniel worked brilliantly in defence to keep the Starlights scoreless. The excitement and pressure was now on 0.02 to 0.00 up and playing against a strong wind the Starlights hit the ground running and scored1.01 in a few minutes. The chips were now down and backs to the wall but like tigers they fought. They began to put pressure on the Starlights defence and with Cian and Adam winning good ball made inroads to create a chance for Cormac which was finished to the net by Luke Cullen. With time now against the Starlights the score stood Shels 1.02 to Starlights 1.01, every Shels man stood tall and with Daniel making a brilliant save there was no way back for the Starlights as the final whistle sounded amid great scenes of joy. This rounds off a great double for this group who won the hurling last week. The boys have a great work rate, great attitude and a will to win. Congratulations to all concerned and enjoy the celebrations.
