Senior Hurlers bow out to St. Martins

Shelmalier relinquished their senior hurling crown going down to a strong St Martins side in the qtr final of the Wexford senior hurling championship in Wexford Park on Saturday last.

Joe Kelly opened the scoring for Shelmaliers with a point in the 5th minute, but a goal and three points before St Martins in the first 10 minutes put them in a commanding lead. A further three points from Joe Kelly and two points from Eoin Doyle put only three point between the sides as the game entered the 20th minute, but a late rally by St Martins saw the Shelmalier trail by 0-8 to 1-10 at half time. The second half was a low score affair until the Shelmaliers got a penalty in the 20th minute which goalie Brian Murphy fired to the St Martins net and again he was given an opportunity from a 21 yard free in the 28th minute but this time it flew over the bar to the relief of the Piercestown men. Even all the Shelmalier players put in a big effort St Martins go through to the semifinals on a final score line of Shelmaliers 1-10 St Martins 1-16. It will be the turn of the Shelmalier senior footballers this week when they take on St James in the county semi final which will be played in Wexford Park on Sunday next starting at 4-30pm and your support would be gratefully appreciated.
