Our senior footballers win in extra time V Starlight’s to progress to Semi finals.
Shelmalier senior footballers progressed to the semifinal of the Wexford senior football championship following an exciting 1-19 to 2-14 victory, after extra time, over the Starlight’s played in Wexford Park on Saturday last. Aidan Cash opened the scoring for the Shelmaliers with a point in the first minute, but Starlight’s soon took the initiative with three unanswered points. Points from Aidan Murphy, Eoghan Nolan, AJ Lehane and Glen put the Shelmaliers back in front on the 15 minute mark and a late rally by the black and amber side with further points from Derek Walsh, Simon Donohoe, and AJ Lehane (2) saw the Shelmaliers lead by 0-9 to 0-4 at half time. The Starlight’s came out in the second half with all guns blazing and they quickly took a 1-7 to 0-9 lead after 10 minutes and they continued their fine form when they extended their lead to 2-10 to 0-11 after 18th minutes and the Shelmaliers cause didn’t look good. However, the never give up attitude of this team saw them score five unanswered through points from AJ Lehane, Stephen Banville, Craig McCabe (2) and Eoghan Nolan in the closing 10 minutes to send the game into extra time. The Shelmaliers got a great start in the first period of extra time with points from Glen Malone, Craig McCabe, Brian Malone and a converted penalty by Craig McCabe to take a commanding lead 1-19 to 2-11. The Shelmaliers defense came under pressure in the closing 10 minutes but they held out to win by a two point margin.
