Our senior hurlers completed the league section of the championship when they took on Buffers Alley in Wexford Park and after a great contest the Alley won:Shelmaliers 3-10 Buffers Alley 4-11.
Even though the team suffered defeat on the day they had already qualified for the quarter finals of the competition. Buffers Alley got off to a great start and had 1-2 on the scoreboard before Ciaran O Shaughnessy fired to the Alley net after 8 minutes. The Alley extended their lead to 2-6 to 1-0 after 15 minutes before the Shelmaliers stormed back to leave a half time score of 2-6 to 2-4 with Ciaran O Shaughnessy getting his second goal and Joe Kelly accurate from frees. The third quarter was an even contest with Joe Kelly accurate from place balls, however, the Alley fought back in the final quarter before Ciaran O Shaughnessy got his third goal which saw a frantic finish to the match with the Shelmaliers failing to get the much needed scores in the dying minutes to win the game.
Shels will meet St. Martin’s in the quarter finals fixed for week ending 25/26th September.
