The U12 2015 playing season kicked off in tough windy conditions in Hollymount last Sunday against a strong St. Martins team.
The first game of the year is always a tough one but our girls did themselves proud but unfortunately came out at the wrong end of the result.
As the Martins could only field ten players, it was played with ten a side. We had a very good turn out for the day that was in it with seventeen girls togging out and playing at least two quarters each. The Martins played with the strong wind in the first two quarters in which they ran up the majority of their scoreline. Our backs did well to cope with this pressure with Keeva Campbell pulling off some fine saves in goal before coming outfield to put in some serious defence work where she was supported by her back line of Erin Byrne who captained the team for this match, flanked by Sinead Banville and Abi Gillen with Grace Harding Kenny also putting in a fine performance of defending. Our midfielders had a tough match with Caoimhe Parker, Mai Ling Tynan, Sophie Whelan, Nicole Gillen, Danielle O’Leary and Aoibhe Manley all doing a hard stint in midfield throughout the four quarters. Our forwards all fought hard throughout the game with Emma Flynn Doyle grabbing the two goals for Shels, with good support play from Aoife Hearne, Katie Feeney and Ciara McMahon, these were also helped with the additions of Ava Watters and Eimear Flanagan who were two of seven players to make their first U12 appearance. Leaving the final scoreline of 7-5 to 2-00 in favour of the Martins.
This was a promising first performance for this early stage in the year with a lot of positives and some things to continue to work on throughout the year. The next match is due to be in two weeks time away to Kilmore with the next U12 training on Thursday at 6pm outdoors weather permitting so please bring boots and runners without forgetting your gum shields!!
