Our senior footballers had a comprehensive win over Adamstown last night and are now through to the quarter finals where they will probably meet Sarsfields.
The Shelmalier Senior footballers had a convincing 2-15 to 0-4 victory over Adamstown in the 5th round of the championship played in Bellefield on Friday night last, therefore qualify for the championship quarter final and an expected meeting with the Sarsfields. This was a game which the Shelmaliers were always in control and the team exhibited some outstanding teamwork and commitment throughout the match. The first 5 minutes of play saw the Shelmaliers immediately on the attack, but they were guilty of missing some great goal scoring opportunities before Craig McCabe fired over his team’s first score with a fine free in the 6th minute. When a McCabe shot power off the crossbar Brian Doyle was on hand to fire to the Adamstown’s net in the 7th minute. Paraic O Leary moved up field to get his side’s second goal in the 11th minute with Craig McCabe, Tony Smith, Aidan Cash and Stephen Banville adding further points before the sides went in at half with a score line of Shelmaliers 2-6 Adamstown 0-2. Throughout the first half the Shelmalier full back line of Andre O Brien, Eoin Doyle, Simon Donohoe and goalie Graham Lawlor-Ryan repelled many an Adamstown attack as the Shelmaliers began many of their moves for this line of the field.
The second half began as the first ended with the Shelmaliers continuing their dominance throughout the field. The Shelmalier half back line of Paraic O Leary, Aidan Murphy and Glen Malone moved forward on many occasions to assist the mid field pairing of Ibar Murphy and Brian Malone as the Shelmaliers continued wave after wave of attacks on the Adamstown goal. This pressure eventually resulted in additional points for Craig McCabe, Eoghan Nolan, Simon Donohoe and Derek Walsh as the Shelmaliers built up a commanding 2-13 to 0-4 with the game entered the last 10 minutes of play. The second half also saw the introduction of Barry O Connor, Derek Walsh, James Cash, Tommy Barron and Cathal Gaule and they all certainly played their individual part in this victory. The closing stages of the match saw Brian Malone and Craig McCabe adding additions score for the ‘Over the Water’ side giving a final score line of Shelmaliers 2-15 Adamstown 0-4.
