Determined display by Senior footballers:
The Shelmalier Senior footballers recovered from a slow start to claim fine victory by 2-10 to 1-10 over Gusserane in the 4th round of the football championship played in Grantstown on Saturday last. A great goal from corner back Simon Donohoe after 15 minutes of the first half saw the Shelmaliers register their first score of the half, while Gusserane had got four unanswered points between the 6th and 13th minute. Brian Malone soon added his sides first point of the game to level matters three minutes later. The Shelmaliers continued to dominate play throughout the field but were guilty of wasting a number of scoreable opportunities before Aidan Murphy put his side in the lead for the first time with a point in the 25th minute. Full forward Stephen Banville got his sides last score of the half to leave a half time score of Shelmaliers 1-3 Gusserane 0-5, with it all to play for in the second half.
Early points from Brian Doyle and Stephen Banville extended the Shelmalier lead on the resumption but Gusserane put only a single point between the sides 1-5 to 0-7 with two well taken points of their own after 10 minutes. The Shelmaliers fast movement of the ball paid dividend’s two minutes later when a number of great player interaction resulted in by Eoghan Nolan firing to the roof of the Gusserane net. This spurred on the black and amber side with points from Paraic O Leary, Craig McCabe (2) and Stephen Banville it looked like an easy victory for the Shelmaliers. However, Gusserane had other ideas and two further points and a goal after 25 minutes ensured an exciting finish to the match with a single goal between the sides. Gusserane tried their best but were unable to break down the Shelmalier defence well marshalled by Graham Lawler-Ryan, Simon Donohoe, Eoin Doyle and Ciaran O Shaughnessy. Brian Doyle got the Shelmaliers assurance point in the last 2 minutes to give a final score line of Shelmaliers 2-10 Gusserane 1-9.
