The Shelmalier Junior footballers went out of the championship at the quarter final stage following a tight and low scoring match against Blackwater played in Oylgate this evening.
The wet and windy conditions dictated the pattern of the match with the Shelmaliers failing to score in the second half while playing against a stiff wind, while Blackwater managed only a single point in the first half. When the referee blew the final whistle the final score read Shelmaliers 1-2 Blackwater 0-7 which reflected the low score nature of the match. William O’Shaughnessy got the Shels off to an early lead with a superb goal after 12 minutes. Joe Kelly added a point shortly afterwards and Tony Smith added Shelmaliers third score with a point in the 25th minute, to leave a half time score of Shelmaliers 1-2 Blackwater 0-1.
Playing against the stiff wind and rain in the second half the Shelmaliers had a number of scoring changes but were guilty of overplaying the ball in scorable positions. There were fine performances from the majority of the Shelmaliers players in the second half, but it was very difficult as the weather conditions and light got worst as the game entered the last quarter. Blackwater took advantage of the weather conditions and scored 6 unanswered points to leave a final score of Blackwater 0-7 Shelmaliers 1-2.
