Seniors reach Quarter final

In the recent Leinster sevens

A group of ten players along with mentors were up bright and early on Saturday, April 26th to travel to Clane in Co. Kildare for the annual Leinster sevens, moved in the calendar from its normal October slot to April. Our first game was against Paulstown from Kilkenny and we started on a bright note, leading by 2-3 to 1-2 at the interval and going on to triumph by 4-3 to 2-4 in the eight-minute per half encounter.

Team: Kate Kelly, Leona Tector, Maeve Quill, Mag Kelly (capt., 1-0), Anne-Marie Kelly (1-0), Niamh Walsh (1-2), Deirdre McMahon (1-1). Rolling subs. – Jane Mythen, Ciara Donohoe, Katie Lacey.

Our next opponents were St. Vincent’s from Dublin and with only the top team qualifying direct for the semi-finals, we suffered a setback when we went down by 2-4 to 1-3. We trailed by 1-1 to 0-1 at half-time and couldn’t bridge the gap despite our best efforts.

Team: Kate Kelly (1-1, 0-1 ’30), Leona Tector, Ciara Donohoe (0-1), Deirdre McMahon, Mag Kelly (capt., 0-1 free), Anne-Marie Kelly, Niamh Walsh. Rolling subs. – Maeve Quill, Jane Mythen, Katie Lacey.

This left us with a must-win outing against Kilmessan from Meath in our last group game to be sure of qualification, and three goals in the first three minutes put us well on the road as we went on to triumph by 4-4 to 2-3.

Team: Anne-Marie Kelly, Maeve Quill, Leona Tector (0-1), Mag Kelly (capt.), Niamh Walsh (0-1), Kate Kelly (2-1, 1-0 free), Deirdre McMahon (2-1). Rolling subs. – Ciara Donohoe, Jane Mythen, Katie Lacey.

The quarter-final draw pitted us against Rathnure in a derby game and unfortunately this is where we made our exit.  They never looked back after hitting 1-1 in the first 50 seconds, and while we briefly led after goals from Kate Kelly and Deirdre McMahon, our rivals took over and were ahead at the break by 2-4 to 2-0. They added the first three points of the new half to leave us struggling with such a short space of time to make up the deficit and, while we did rally near the end, it wasn’t enough and we went down by 2-9 to 3-2.

Team: Anne-Marie Kelly, Maeve Quill, Leona Tector, Mag Kelly (capt., 0-1), Niamh Walsh, Kate Kelly (1-1, 0-1 free), Deirdre McMahon (2-0). Rolling subs. – Ciara Donohoe, Jane Mythen, Katie Lacey.

It was a worthwhile exercise to travel to Kildare and everyone enjoyed themselves in the best traditions of sevens competitions despite the outcome. Thanks to the players who made the effort to attend.
