Shelmalier Senior hurlers had a competitive game tonight V Ferns in the league with Ferns coming out on top by 3 points. 2-13 to 2-16.
Ferns came blazing out of the blocks and had amassed 1-4 inside the opening 5 minutes with the goal deflecting off a Shels defender. Ciaran O’Shaughnessy drew first blood for Shels with a point with Conor Byrne adding a free moments later. Both sides traded points but in the last quarter Shels getting back into the game hit 3 unanswered points (Banville, Malone O’Shaughnessy). Again both teams traded points to the break to leave half time score 1-9 to 0-7 in favour of Ferns. On the resumption Ferns stretched the lead with a great goal, an overhead strike of the ball to stretch the gap to 8. Conor Byrne converted two frees before Joe Kelly kept Shels in the game with a well taken major to leave just three between the sides. However Ferns also converted two frees soon after and a point from play to leave 6 dividing the sides. Yet again Shels dug in and were rewarded with their second major when Conor Byrne blasted to the back of the net. 2-9 to 2-12. This gap of three points was to remain for the remainder of the game despite good points from Joe Kelly, Brian Malone & Conor Byrne (Free). Final score 2-16 to 2-13 in favour of Ferns.
A good team effort recovering well from the worst possible start and auguring well for the start of the championship Fri 9th May at 7 PM in Killurin V Adamstown.
