Late goal sinks Junior Footballers

A late goal in the closing minutes of this exciting Junior B Football championship match against Crossabeg/Ballymurn resulted in a two point winning margin for the home team by 2-9 to 3-4.

In this exciting and entertaining game played in Ballymurn on Friday evening last, the Shelmaliers were slow to get into the game with Crossabeg having 4 unanswered points in the first 12 minutes of play. A fine executed goal from corner forward Robert Kirwan in the 15th minutes brought the visitors back into the game. Further points from Aodhan Foley and Colin Redmond saw the black and amber side trail by 1-2 to 0-8 at half time.

The Shelmaliers were quick off the mark on the resumption and had two great goals from Tony Smyth and Daniel Murphy in the first 5 minutes of play. The Shelmaliers were dominating the play at this stage and as the game entered the final quarter Terry Gainfort fired over a fine point from 40 yard to give his side a 3-3 to 0-8 lead. The same player could have wrapped it up for his team when his pile driver came off the crossbar in the 20th minute. Crossabeg gradually got back into the game scoring a goal and a point with 6 minutes to go. The Shelmalier team were determined in all sections of the play but they couldn’t get the all important scores.
