Victory for Senior camogie

Well done to our Senior camogie team who had a good victory 6-14 to 0-1 last night against Bunclody in the League!

The Seniors maintained their unbeaten record in the league with a very straightforward 6-14 to 0-1 win over a weak Bunclody side in Hollymount on Monday last. In truth, this was a wasted exercise for both teams as we learned nothing from it while the outcome demoralised our opponents. The league would be of greater benefit to everybody if the five teams in the top championship played each other, and the next five (including Bunclody) did likewise.

We can only play what’s put in front of us though, and in that regard it was a case of job done and move on. It may seem like a complete contradiction, but we led by 4-6 to 0-1 at half-time even though we had played poorly and were very sloppy in our execution; a view that nobody – mentors, players or onlookers – could disagree with.

Usually in these situations it’s very hard for the stronger team to raise their game no matter how hard they try, and this was undoubtedly the case. Full-forward Deirdre McMahon scored our first goal in the ninth minute before Katrina Parrock added a brace, with Ciara Neville converting the fourth from close range. Hazel O’Leary struck the last three scores of the half and the game was well and truly over at the break when we held that 17-point lead.

On the re-start we continued where we had left off as Katrina completed her hat-trick less than two minutes in while Hazel added a sixth goal near the end of the third quarter. We introduced five substitutes and also brought netminder Sandy Carr outfield, with Katrina taking a breather between the posts. It was far from a classic, but a win’s a win as they say!

Team: Sandy Carr (0-1); Catherine Doyle, Leona Tector, Maeve Quill; Sharron Daly, Mag Kelly (capt.), Ciara Donohoe; Aine Lacey, Niamh Walsh; Anne-Marie Kelly (0-2), Katrina Parrock (3-1), Hazel O’Leary (1-5); Kate Kelly (0-4, 2 frees), Deirdre McMahon (1-1), Ciara Neville (1-0). Subs. – Eadaoin Fitzgerald for Walsh (33), Jane Mythen for Donohoe (39), Lisa Quill for Doyle (42), Aine Barron for Lacey (42), Shauna Kelly for McMahon (42), also Mary Cullen, Therese Sheil, Michelle Harding, Ceara O’Brien.

Next on the agenda for the Seniors is the South-East league, a new competition which is being organised by the Carlow County Board. We will have five group games, with the top teamqualifying directly for the final while the second and third finishers will contest a semi-final. This will be ideal preparation for the county championship which isn’t too far away at this stage.

Our first game is against Camross of Laois at a Carlow town venue on Thursday next, May 15th, at a time to be confirmed on Facebook and Twitter. We will face Windgap (Kilkenny) on May 22nd at a venue to be decided, and we will be at home to Myshall (Carlow) on the 29th. Round four will be on Thursday, June 12th, against St. Bridget’s of Rathdowney (Laois) at a Carlow venue, and we will be at home to Blackwater – this game is down for June 23rd but will be changed as that’s the date for our championship opener against Rathnure. The semi-final is down for Monday, July 7th, with the final on July 14th.
