Hard luck to our Under 14 camogie team who lost out to Bunclody last night in the championship semi-final 4-1 to 1-2
After the incredible highs of last year, there was intense disappointment in Oulart on Monday evening when our Under-14s were well beaten by Bunclody in the Premier championship semi-final on a 4-1 to 1-2 scoreline. While the general view is that St. Martin’s are too strong for all-comers in this grade, it was felt that we were good enough to get to the decider at least and then have a crack at them with nothing to lose.
Alas, the girls never got going and didn’t produce anything close to the form they are capable of. A Bunclody goal inside two minutes didn’t bode well, although Mikaela Lanigan pulled back a brace of points from frees. We conceded another goal though and trailed by 2-1 to 0-2 at half-time, and when our rivals struck a third just 38 seconds after the re-start it really knocked the heart out of our challenge. To be fair, we were on the attack a lot more than Bunclody for the remainder of the game, but the goals we needed simply didn’t come.
Mikaela Lanigan did rattle the net from a long-range free with less than eight minutes left, but the fact that we didn’t get a score from play tells its own story. In mitigation, mentors Mick Lanigan, Emma Carroll and Mag Murphy were working from a very small squad, and just 17 players were available as a result of injuries and one very late defection.
The absence of Sarah Harding-Kenny, the engine room of the team, was sorely felt while Aine Fitzgerald’s presence would also have been a big help. We had a full-forward line comprised entirely of Under-12s and a few more in that age bracket also lined out, so the team did its best in the circumstances and there will be better days no doubt. Their league game versus St. Martin’s, scheduled for Saturday morning, has been postponed by the County Board as the county team are playing in a competition the next day.
