Our senior footballers got off to a great start in the championship when they defeated Enniscorthy side Starlights on a score line 4-7 to 1-6.
Shels were in command the entire game and there was a huge team effort. Shels registered their first score with a free taken by Aidan Murphy with Tommy Barron pointing moments later. Tommy Barron did great work to off load to Alan Griffith who passed to the in rushing Liam Donnelly who got Shels first major of the day within the opening ten minutes. Craig McCabe pointed from a placed ball before Starlights registered their first score of the game coming in the 16th minute. Eoghan Nolan (1) and McCabe (2F) piled on the pressure before Brian Doyle after a great run blasted to the back of the net with 5 minutes remaining in the half. Good play from midfield seen a great ball passed to McCabe who was unlucky to hit the upright, denying Shels a third major in the first half. Starlights pointed in 31st minute to leave the half time score 2-6 to 0-2.
In the second half amid sheeting rain, heavy thunder and lighting, Shels stayed in command amassing 2-1 (Free McCabe and goals Aidan Cash and Eoghan Nolan) whilst Starlights had registered a point. The score was 4-7 to 0-3 with 7 minutes to go. Starlights hit 1-3 in the closing minutes of the game with Wexford minor, Dillon Redmond, newly introduced, taking his opportunity well.
