Monageer too strong for juniors

Three goals and two points from Monageer in the space of 15 minutes in the first half was the deciding factor in the first round of the junior football championship match against the Shelmaliers played in Blackwater on Monday last

The Shelmaliers started brightly and in the third minute full forward James Shiggins powering to the Monageer net after a fine run by corner forward Joe Kelly. However, it would take another 22 minutes for the next Shelmalier score when James Cash pointed in the 25th minute. In the intervening time Monageer took control of the game scoring 3-2 without reply and if it wasn’t for the fine goal keeping by goalie Sean Byrne the score would have been much greater. Monageer added a fourth goal in the dying minutes to leave a half time score of Shelmaliers 1-1 Monageer 4-3.

Three early second half points between the 3rd and 10th minutes from Joe Kelly, Conor Walsh and Conor Byrne saw a slight revival from the Shelmaliers. However, the last 20 minutes was tight and low scoring affair which saw both teams trading scores, with the Shelmalier scores coming with a goal from Feargal Hynes and a point from Conor Byrne. This left a fulltime score of Monageer 4-5 Shelmaliers 2-5.
