U14 camogie league

Hard luck to our Under 14 team who lost out to Rathnure in their second League game on Thursday, April 24th in Nickey Rackard Park

Our side got off to a great start with Mikaela Lanigan scoring a goal, after Sarah Harding-Kenny sent in a lovely ball in the tenth minute (1-0 to 0-0).  There was great play from our midfield girls, Caitlin Carroll and Sarah Harding-Kenny, and another free from Mikaela gave St Ibars the chance to keep the pressure on the Rathnure backs.

Another free followed taken by Mikaela on the 30 yard line, and it was knocked out by Rathnure to give us a ’45.  Mikaela took it, but unfortunately it went wide.  Rathnure got their first score of the game, a point in the fifteenth minute.  In the sixteenth minute Lauren Murphy scored a point, after latching on to a free taken by Mikaela Lanigan.

Chloe Mythen, Molly Byrne, and Abbie Devereux stepped up to the mark with great clearances from the backs.  Rathnure sent in a free whcih was cleared by Sarah Whelan and Alison Doyle.  Chloe Mythen took our next free and sent it into our forwards, with Ailis Neville, Caitríona Kinsella, Andrea Fielding, Lauren Murphy and Ciara Banville all keeping the pressure on.  Rathnure were given a free, followed by St Ibar’s picking up a free taken by Mikaela Lanigan in the 23rd minute.  Rathnure completed the first half scoring with a point from a free to leave us ahead 1-1 to 0-2.

Catie Byrne came on for Andrea Fielding at half-time, and Mikaela Lanigan yet again opened the second-half scoring by pointing a free in the 29th minute, with Rathnure responding with a goal in the 36th minute.  Aoife Fielding normally plays in the forwards but due to her recent thumb fracture only four weeks ago, she lined out in goal, making some good saves.  Lauren Murphy moved to wing-forward, with Caitriona Kinsella going into the full-forward position.

The opposition scored a point to make it 1-3 to 1-2 and leave us only one point down, and the pressure was on.  A sweet goal from Sarah Harding-Kenny following a free taken by Mikaela Lanigan left the score 2-2 to 1-3 in our favour with only five minutes left to play.  Mikaela Langian took a free, but unfortunately it went wide.  The opposition were determined to change the outcome and after Aoife made a great save, there was too much pressure on the backs, Rathnure got their goal, leaving the final score 2-3 to 2-2 in their favour – a very narrow defeat.

Despite our loss, with a dispute over a point in the first-half that some of our mentors felt went over, the girls should hold their heads up high, and look forward to the Slaney festival this weekend, when they defend their title.
