Shels U21 Hurlers lost to St. Martins -14 to -9.
The Shelmalier under 21 hurlers were beaten 0-14 to 0-9 in the first round of the under 21 hurling championship played in Piercestown on St. Patrick’s Day. The opening encounter was evenly contested with Conor Tobin pointing for the Shels in the 5th minute but St. Martin’s scored two unanswered points to lead as the game entered the second quarter. The Shelmaliers really came into the game at this stage and they began to dominate in the forward line, with a number of goal scoring attempts going narrowly wide of the upright. With further points from Conor Tobin, Jody Donohoe and Eoghan Nolan the sides were level at 5 points each at the break. The sides were again level at 6 points each after ten minutes of the second half, but as the game progressed the local side began to take control around mid field resulting in four unanswered points for St. Martin’s. The Shelmaliers did attempt to counter this play resulting in further points Conor Tobin and brothers Jody and Simon Donohoe to leave an exciting last 10minutes of play. However, St. Martin’s pulled away in the closing stages and deservedly won with a five point margin.
