Shelmalier senior footballers had a solid win today over St. Fintan’s in the league in Hollymount 3-12 to 2-5.
Shels met newly promoted St. Fintan’s in Hollymount last Saturday after the pitches were unplayable in Killinick. The visitors drew first blood with a well taken goal inside the first two minutes. Craig McCabe evened up the sides with 2 minors after good work by Stephen Banville and Liam Donnelly. Both sides traded points before Craig McCabe after a superb pass from Eoghan Nolan blasted to the back of the net to put Shels ahead for the first time in the match. 1-4 to 1-2 with 20 mins gone. Aidan Cash also majored minutes later and with Craig McCabe first pointing and then goaling just on half time the sides went into the break 3-5 to 1-3 in favour of Shels.
Shels had Graham Staples unluckily dismissed with a black card just before half time and he was replaced by Eoin Doyle.
On the resumption Brian Doyle and Liam Donnelly got two quick points with St. Fintan’s working hard to keep in touch replying in kind. The newly introduced Joe Kelly pointed and St. Fintan’s were rewarded for their efforts with a major coming to the end of the first quarter. However St. Fintan’s then seemed to go out of the game and it was Shels all the way to the final whistle with points from Craig McCabe (4), Joe Kelly and Neal Rossiter. Final score 3-14 to 2-5. Amongst those to shine for Shels were Simon Donohoe, Aidan Murphy, Brian Doyle and Craig McCabe with a personal tally of 2-8.
