Junior Footballers overcome Blackwater

The Shelmalier Junior footballers continued their winning ways with a commanding 1-11 to 0-8 over near neighbours Blackwater which was played in Blackwater on Sunday last.

The Shelmaliers showed early skill and determination with two well taken points from Joe Kelly after 10 minutes. The Shelmaliers continued their dominance with a goal on 15 minutes from Conor Byrne after a scramble in the Blackwater goalmouth. As the game progressed Blackwater came more into the game but find defensive work by Graham Lawlor, Conor Walsh, Eoghan Fitzgerald and Willie O Shaughnessy kept their team in a commanding lead. However, there was only a single point between the sides 1-3 to 0-5 after 25 minutes with Liam Donnelly getting the addition point for the Shelmaliers. Conor Byrne rapped up the scoring with his second score of the half as the ref blew his whistle. 1-4 to 0-5.

Blackwater came out very strong on the resumption and goalie Sean Byrne made a number of great saves to keep Blackwater at bay. Joe Kelly who was very lively in the Shelmalier full forward line got his third score in the 12th minute and Brian O Connor added a second with a further point from Conor Byrne left a single a goal 1-7 to 0-7 after 15 minutes of play. The last 15 minutes saw the Shelmaliers in complete control with Joe Kelly (2) and Aidan Clarke (2) extending their teams lead to leave a final score of Shelmaliers 1-11 to Blackwater 0-8.
