Shels overcome St Anne’s for the second time
Following on from last week’s great Shelmalier hurler’s victory over St Anne’s in the Championship quarter final, it was the turn of our senior footballer’s this week when they took on the same opponents in Wexford Park yesterday.
After a great contest when the Shels led from the start to finish the black and amber side won by 2-12 to 1-11. The Shels got off to a great start with Derek Walsh moving forward to fire to the Anne’s net after 2 minutes. The Over the water side continued to dominate in all areas of the field with Stephen Corrigan, Barry O’Connor (0-2 frees), Derek Walsh and Stephen Banville giving their side a commanding lead by 1-5 to 0-0 after 10 minutes. As the game progressed the Anne’s came more into the game and they scored six points without reply to leave a half time score of 1-5 to 0-6 in favour of the Shels.
A much more determined Shelmalier side came out in the second half with Liam Donnelly and Stephen Corrigan extending their sides lead before Eoghan Nolan got his side’s second goal after some great team play, involving swift movement of the ball from the backs to the forwards, giving the Shels a commanding lead 2-7 to 0-6 after 6 minutes. St Anne’s replied with three points between the 7th and 18th minute, but the Shels were in command all over the field and further points from Barry O’Connor, Derek Walsh and Brian Malone ensured victory by 2-12 to 1-11.
