There was great excitement as our third team celebrated the major acheivement of being successful in their championship game. The progress has been remarkable, as on the first night it was an acheivement in itself to field a team and then received a hammering, the second night saw us alot more competitive and conceded four scores, on night three we started to pick off points and were in contention until the last ten minutes, and night four saw us storm to a most impressive 2-12 to nil victory over Gusserane ( who have fielded their first adult team).
Team captain Emma Carroll and Ornagh Cullen (free) set the tone with early points before Catherine Roche struck a well taken goal in the tenth minute. We continued to pile on the scores to lead 2-8 to nil at half time, with Emma adding three points, Catherine getting a brace, while Angie Kinsella also chipped in with a goal and a point.
Four more points were added in the second half, with Catherine bringing her personal tally to 1-3 while super-sub Megan Murphy, Elaine Banville and Lisa Murphy also got in on the act. The game started nine-a-side as we agreed to this to facilitate our opponents, and it was ten-a-side in the second half when they found an extra player.
The match was played in a great spirit and this was remarked upon afterwards by Gusserane mentors Mary Fitzharris and Nicola Culleton who are keen to travel to Hollymount in the near future for a challenge game, and we will be happy to oblige. Team as follows: Katie Lacey, Sharon Carr, Dot Byrne, Catherine Roche (1-3), Emma Carroll (capt 0-4), Ornagh Cullen (0-1 free), Kirsty Hynds, Angie Kinsella (1-1), Jackie Mythen. Subs: Theresa Kehoe for Lacey, Mandy Murphy for Byrne, Megan Murphy (0-1) for Kinsella,Elaine Banville (0-1) for Carroll, Lisa Murphy (0-1) for Mythen, Katie Lacey back on at half-time as tenth player, Dot Byrne for Mandy Murphy inj.
There will be no game this week, our remaining championship fixture away to Glynn/Barntown on 3 September.
