Senior Footballers though to Qtr Finals

Well done to our senior footballers who have qualified for the last 8 in the County after an assured performance against Castletown last night.

Despite losing the on form Tommy Barron early in the game, goals courtesy of Eoghan Nolan and Liam Donnelly, together with 2 fine saves from Graham Lawler Ryan combined with a huge work ethic by the entire team meant we had a good win 2-10 to 1-8.

Shels got off to a great start pointing twice in 2 minutes, Barron and Banville. However Castletown almost goaled but for the quick reflexes of net minder Graham Lawler-Ryan. They did convert the resulting ’45. Alan Griffith and Tommy Barron extended Shels lead before the hard working Brian Malone put Eoghan Nolan through for a goal. Shels were flying and leading 1-4 to -2 with 20 minutes gone. However Shels were to lose influential player Tommy Barron to a knee injury after a coming together with an opponent. Play was suspended for several minutes before he was stretchered off. Stephen Corrigan was introduced in his place. The game had only resumed a few seconds when Shels lost possession of the ball and Castletown goaled. 1-4 to 1-2. Both sides gave it all to the half time whistle with Shels adding a free (Derek Walsh) and Castletown a point from play. Half time score 1-5 to 1-3. On the resumption Shels proved to be the quickest off the mark with a point from Stephen Banville and a free Derek Walsh. Great team work combined to put Liam Donnelly through for Shels second major of the day. Castletown were far from done and quickly tagged on 4 points without reply to leave a goal between the sides. Shels dug even deeper and were enjoying a lot of possession finished strongly with 2 points from Barry O’Connor (F) and a cracker of a point from Stephen Corrigan. Castletown tagged on a late point in injury time to leave final score 2-10 to 1-8. Shelmaliers are through to the final 8. Castletown, Kilanerin and St. Martin’s also progress from our group.

The team played as a unit for the entire game and everyone had to be on top form to secure this vital victory. In particular our defence were kept extremely busy for the game and all 6 backs could not have done more. Midfield was outstanding today and kept the ball moving extremely well. All forwards were on the top of their game and took their opportunities to the max. Well done lads.
