Seniors take good victory V Gusserane

Shels senior footballers met Gusserane in Bellefield this afternoon in the 3rd Round of the Senior Football Championship.

Graham Cullen got Gusserane off to a good start before Derek Walsh levelled the sides. Eoghan Nolan levelled matters again moments later with a great score. The sides traded points with Barry O’Connor, Ibar Murphy and Aidan Murphy all pointing for Shels. A late surge from Gusserane brought the gap back to a single point at half time -07 to -06 in favour of Shels.
On the resumption Shels pulled away with points from Andre O’Brien and Derek Walsh (F), before disaster struck. A rare lapse in defence and a dropped ball seen Gusserane taking full advantage and getting the all-important goal to level the sides. However, Shels were far from done and Derek Walsh & Barry O’Connor put daylight between the sides 0-11 to 1-6. Gusserane took the next 2 scores but Derek Walsh and Stephen Banville replied in kind. There was a point between the sides with 7 minutes to go.  Brian Malone was getting plenty of ball time and making fantastic use of this. He pointed and moments later after a long solo run he put the newly introduced Craig McCabe through for Shels only major of the day. The on form Barry O’Connor added a late point and Shels were the justified victors 1-15 to 1-9. Best for Shels Brian Malone, Derek Walsh and the midfield pairing of Ibar Murphy and Barry O’Connor.
