Local supporters were out in force for the home debut of the ‘C’ Crushers against Bunclody on Monday 22 July. It was great to see 17 togging out for this 12-a-side fixture, incl 8 who hadn’t been involved in the first round.
And with four of the history making debut team not playing on this occasion, it means that the grand total of 21 players have lined out so far, many of whom are returning to camogie for the first time in a long number of years.
This was a far more competitive fixture than the St James’ clash, and fair play to everyone for trying so hard and putting in such an encouraging performance. Best wishes are extended to Deirdre O’Leary(nee Hearne) who unfortunately tore her calf muscle early in the second half, and we hope that she will put her vocals chords to good use on the sideline as a supporter now until the injury clears up. No better woman!!!
There was nothing between the teams in the first half, with just one point scored by Bunclody while our captain Emma Carroll, was unlucky to strike a brace of wides coming up to the interval. Bunclody pounced for their first goal less than two minutes into the second half, and they added two more to end up victors 3-1 to nil.
However, we shouldn’t lose sight of what this team is all about, an outlet to ensure that anyone who wants a game and a bit of craic can don the blue and red jersey and enjoy themselves for 50 minutes once a week for the rest of the summer. I’m sure plenty of bones were creaking on Tuesday morning, but there’s a decent break until our next game at home to Horeswood on 6 August as we have a bye on Tueday next, so keep it going ladies, and we’ll see you then!
A back fixture away to Adamstown also needs to be arranged, and there will be matches to follow against Gusserane (away), Glynn-Barntown (away), and Fethard (home). Team captain Emma Carroll intends organising some light training for this group only, every Monday evening at 7.30pm, directly after U12 training. If you are interested in getting involved, please contact Emma (087) 4129566 or simply turn up on Monday. Everyone is welcome!
