Hard luck to Intermediates

The learning curve continued for the Intermediates in Monageer on Tuesday 2 July when they went down to the hosts in the second round of the championship by 3-5 to 0-1

To be fair to the side, they were without Niamh Walsh and Michelle Murphy who were promoted to the Seniors the night previous, while Nikki Scallan and Roisin Tobin were also considerable losses.

on a positive side Ciara Neville, Eadaoin Fitzgerald and Maeve Doyle were all back after missing the first round, but it was a tall order trying to find a way past six-time All Star Catherine O’Loughlin at centre-back even though Ceara O’Brien matched her very well on any ground balls.

Our backs had a lot of pressure with Mary Cullen making a couple of good saves and Monageer/Boolavogue having to work hard for the first three points.  Nearly 14 scoreless minutes followed before a flowing move down the right flank saw Caroline Curran pick out Dervla Potter for an excellent point. This proved to be our sole score, with our rivals getting a lucky goal from a long-range free after a miscalculation by a defender, and adding a second just before half time when a forward was allowed to run too far on a solo run.  It was 2-3 to 0-1 at half time.  In the second half we didn’t attack but we held the winners considerably well, and they only added three more scores.

Just four teams remain in this championship after Rathnure’s withdrawl, and we assumed that the semi-finals would be a 1 v 4 and 2 v 3 basis.  We were informed that it will be an open draw so these group games have no real bearing.

Team as follows:  Mary Cullen, Maeve Doyle, Sinead Kelly, Niamh Doyle, Lisa Quill, Catherine Doyle (capt), Aine Barron, Ciara Neville, Eadaoin Fitzgerald, Chloe Thomas, Ceara O’Brien, Ciara Corrigan, Dervla Potter (0-1), Caroline Curran, Therese Sheil.  Subs;  Katie Lacey, Linzi Lanigan, Chloe Mahon, Megan Murphy.

The next game will be played on Tueday 30 July meeting Naomh Eanna in Hollymount.
