This was another notable achievement for the club as we fielded a third adult team in the championship for the first time ever. It took a lot of phone calls and pleas earlier in the day from Fionnuala Hearne, Emma Carroll and Alan Aherne, to get the 12 players required, but we actually ended up with a substitute and it was a breakthrough in itself to get off the ground by fielding a team. A special mention must go to the mother and daughter pairing of Mag and Megan Murphy, who lined out together for the first time. Mag was one of four legends in action along with Deirdre Hearne, Catherine Roche and super-sub Trish Fielding, and we would welcome more for the next game!
We were a little unfortunate to come up against a team as strong as St James’ in our first outing. They had drawn with our current Intermediate side last year and were only moved down to the Junior C 12-a-side after losing a lot of players to emigration. However, an average age of 22 and a team full of running, they emerged as comfortable victors and should win this championship comfortably.
It’s all about competing and having a bit of craic for our players, and the highlight of Tuesday’s game came in the 17th minute when team captain Emma Carroll scored our first-ever goal at this level! We’re still waiting to get the second, and a point or two would be welcome!!! We’ll keep plugging away and hopefully more players will come forward for the games to follow. Please text Alan Aherne 087 9217766, Fionnuala Hearne 087 2431891, Emma Carroll 087 4129566 or Kathleen Dooley 087 6815479 if you are interested in joining the fun! Thanks to our physio Kevin Murphy, who stepped in to referee the game when the appointed official failed to appear.
Team as follows: Chloe Mahon, Andrea Furlong, Deirdre Hearne, Catherine Roche, Janice Carr, Katie Lacey, Linzi Lanigan, Megan Murphy, Emma Carroll (capt 1-0), Kirsty Hynds, Ornagh Cullen, Mag Murphy. Sub – Trish Fielding for Murphy.
