Junior Hurlers lose game in last 4 mins

Having led almost from the off, Shels were unlucky to concede 1-1 in the final 4 minutes of the game.

In a game that seen a fair few decisions being questioned by both teams on the awarding of frees, things were very close right up to the end. However when the ref awarded a free to Ferns that Shels had thought to be for them, it resulted in Ferns pulling ahead for the first time since the opening minute. Shels hearts were broken when a ’65 stumbled into the back of the net moments later with scarcely 4 mins left on the clock. Shels set about trying to get the all important goal and couldn’t make any inroads to the final score 1-10 to Ferns, 1-6 to Shels. On what wasn’t Shels strongest day by any means, the team did try hard and never gave up and we had dominant performances by Captain Denis Kelly, wing back Cathal Gaule, mid field man Ciaran Walsh who was covering an inordinate amount of ground, and Willie O’Shaughnessy. Team: Willie Redmond, Stephen Whelan, Darren Malone, Eoghan Fitzgerald, Barry O’Connor, Denis Kelly (C), Emmet O’Leary, Ciaran Walsh, Shane Griffith. Willie O’Shaughnessy (1-1), Chris Gordon (0-1), Johnny Campbell, Mick Kelly, Shane Birney (0-4,3F). Sub Conor Tobin for Emmet O’Leary injured.
